The FIQ Pays Tribute to Health Care Pioneers!
With a nod to Montreal’s 375th anniversary, the FIQ is paying tribute to the health care pioneers who cared for Montrealers and developed the profession over time. The FIQ, located at 1234 Papineau in Montreal, will proudly display their pictures outside the building throughout the summer. The pioneers are also featured on the FIQ’s Facebook page.
Who are these four female health care pioneers? (links in French)
- Jeanne Mance was the first secular nurse in North America and founded the hospital Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal in 1645
- Marguerite d’Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns of Montreal, restored and ensured the survival of the General Hospital in 1747 and dedicated her life to caring for the poor
- Nora Livingston was the founder of the Montreal General Hospital’s nursing school in 1890 whose glowing reputation would shine for many years to come, far beyond the city
- Marie-Denise Lefebvre was appointed the director of the Marguerite-d’Youville Institute in 1947 and was a key figure in nursing science
