The challenges of going green
The FIQ takes environmental issues to heart. As we work hard to ensure the public health network receives adequate financing and delivers quality care, we are aware of how the environment impacts all of our health.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 1 in 4 deaths of children under age 5 are attributable to environmental pollution. Sadly, this worrisome statistic also rings true for Quebec. To find out more, visit the following page on the Ministère de la Santé’s website, which is dedicated to the direct and indirect effects climate change has on public health.
I know that these findings will not be enough to push an organization like the FIQ to go green. But as I write this post a few days after public transportation day (September 16) and World Car Free Day (September 22), I know that we have the wisdom and maturity to make the necessary changes.
The 2017 Convention, which will be held from November 27 to December 1, 2017, will be our first test. We have provided the delegates with the tools they need to greatly reduce paper use. Delegates will be able to view all convention documents on their portable devices, and read about the candidates running for election online. But we can’t achieve this feat without the cooperation of all the union representatives. I therefore encourage all delegates who will be in attendance to go green and refrain from printing documents whenever possible.
I know many of you care about the environment. However, just when it’s time to take action is often when logistical and budgetary constraints arise which get in the way of making an environmentally responsible choice. We will need everyone throughout the organization, including affiliated unions, regional offices, employees and the Executive Committee, to put in the extra effort so that we can use creative and environmentally friendly means to make this much needed change and go green.
