The FIQ acknowledges the Morgentaler ruling’s 30th anniversary
Over the years, the FIQ has paid particular attention to the pro-choice movement. In 1987, while abortion was still illegal, the delegation at the FIIQ’s (former FIQ) founding convention adopted a resolution in favour of the right to choose abortion. It also fought for free family planning services, which included abortion services.
On the 30th anniversary of the Morgentaler ruling, a landmark case that decriminalized abortion in Canada, the FIQ co-signed an open letter with the Fédération du Québec in support of family planning. The fight for women’s right to choose abortion is still ongoing. Between the conservative government’s repeated attacks on pro-choice rights and continued unequal access to abortion services, which varies based on the administrative region or a woman’s age, disability, etc., we must continue to strive to make abortion services truly accessible to everyone.
