Safe healthcare professional-to-patient ratio project launched in respiratory therapy at the MUHC
The Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec – FIQ and the MUHC’s Syndicat des professionnelles en soins infirmiers et cardio-respiratoires (SPSICR) attended the launch of the safe healthcare professional-to-patient ratio project in respiratory therapy intensive care at the Montreal General Hospital last Friday.
“We are truly writing history at the McGill University Health Centre for Quebec respiratory therapists. It’s an exciting project but we need to ensure it’s sustainable, that the care quality improvements and reasonable workloads become permanent,” said Sandra Seto, interim President of the SPSICR.
At the launch, participants discussed the ratio project approach and implementation process. Once the joint committee is set up (to ensure project follow-up), a preparatory phase will highlight the prerequisites for starting the ratios. The implementation period will last four months, during which improvements in patient care and staff working conditions will be documented. At the end of the project, a report and proposed measures will be issued for maintaining the ratios.
“We are thrilled about the launch of the 15th ratio project, especially since it’s the first project specifically for respiratory therapists. We’ve been fighting for safe healthcare professional-to-patient ratios for years and are getting closer to our goal of guaranteeing them throughout Quebec,” said Nancy Bédard, FIQ President.
