MOT is a death sentence for healthcare professions: Mobilization on October 16 and 17, 2021
The Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec–FIQ will support the mobilization of FIQ affiliated unions whose members will refuse to work mandatory overtime (MOT) on the weekend of October 16 and 17.
Several affiliated unions held general assemblies in order to talk to their members who are hostages of MOT. This action is part of a vast FIQ offensive with the objective of forcing the managers in the health network to ban the repetitive imposition of MOT on healthcare professionals, an abusive management method for those who are forced to do so.
“Who would like to be cared for by a healthcare professional who is working her third MOT of 16 hours in conditions that don’t even respect professional standards? The answer is obvious, of course not. It’s dangerous for everyone: the patients and our members! It is essential that managers become aware of the inhumanity of such a system, which endangers the safety and health of our members and the public.”

“It has gone on for too long! Perhaps the Minister of Health needs to experience an MOT in a care setting to understand what it means to our members and their patients. We formally invite him to come work for a day alongside them, so that he can see what it means to be held hostage at work with the responsibility of caring, despite exhaustion and family constraints. He needs to see the pressure and intimidation that managers put on the work teams. And see that after 16 consecutive hours of work, no one can provide quality care.”

In the next few days, the FIQ and all its affiliated unions will be rolling out a vast action plan and mobilization campaign with the theme, MOT is a death sentence for healthcare professions. Maintaining MOT as a way of managing destroys all chances of recruiting the thousands of healthcare professionals needed to provide the population with essential care and services throughout the province.
