Committee on the Evolution of the Act respecting end-of-life care: recommendations that take healthcare professionals’ concerns into account
The FIQ and FIQP applaud the report from the Select Committee on the Evolution of the Act respecting end-of-life care tabled on December 8, 2021. Cross-party efforts have proven effective once again. The report goes beyond the recommendations received from each group during the consultation and takes into account the collective reflection with all of its underlying comments and values.
Created on March 31, 2021, the Select Committee had to tackle two issues: “the potential expansion of medical assistance in dying for people who are incapacitated and people suffering from mental disorders.” (unofficial translation)
The FIQ and FIQP consulted members who were directly involved by survey and submitted a brief that was presented to the committee on August 23, 2021. In the brief, the Federations wanted to inform committee members about the needs and concerns of those who provide end-of-life care and assist people who requested medical assistance in dying and their families throughout the process. Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in the end-of-life care continuum and it is important to consider the emotionally charged nature of this role.
By suggesting that SNPs can administer medical assistance in dying, the committee is underscoring that their contribution can promote more equitable access to end-of-life care that is dignified and respects people’s wishes.
Now, let’s hope that public decision-makers will use these suggestions and recognize SNPs’ full scope of practice.
