Negotiations: a look back at the Special Federal Council on June 13 and 14, 2023

The Federal Council on June 13 and 14 was an opportunity for the Negotiating Committee to update the delegation on what happened at the bargaining table over the last weeks. The delegation heard about the many subjects covered, as well as how the negotiations were progressing. The committee highlighted the government’s lack of openness to the union demands and reasserted its determination to continue defending the FIQ members’ interests.

Overview of the member consultation: the employer offers are severely lacking!

From May 8 to 28, 37,294 members gave their feedback on the employer offers submitted at the provincial bargaining table. The delegates at the Federal Council were briefed on the results. They are as clear as day: the members denounce the employer proposals, deeming them insufficient, inadequate and void of anything that will impact needs in the field. The consultation’s findings leave little room for interpretation: the employer offers must be improved, no question.

This consultation strengthens the reasoning that the Negotiating Committee presented at the bargaining table and strengthens the FIQ’s bargaining power. Please note that your representatives at the bargaining table reserve the right to decide on the best moment for making the consultation results public.

Significantly improved working conditions for healthcare professionals working in the Far North

Significant gains were made for members in northern regions (Hudson Bay, Ungava Bay and James Bay). From now on, it will be easier for healthcare professionals in southern regions to go work in the north. What’s more, these employees will get increased pay when they work in northern Quebec, as well as additional trips out (including plane tickets). The Negotiating Committee believes these gains will help to alleviate the inconveniences for members who work in these regions. These benefits were obtained in an agreement that will be applied immediately for the Hudson Bay and Ungava Bay. They will apply to members in Bay James once the collective agreement is signed.

It is important to point out that the strong member mobilization in the Far North contributed to making these gains. We would like to reiterate our solidarity with them.

Be prepared for things to heat up in the fall as we get ready to strike!

In the coming weeks, we will have to turn up the pressure on the government as a reminder that healthcare professionals are mobilized and determined to get the working conditions that meet their expectations.

The Negotiating Committee shared the next steps of the negotiation strategy at the Federal Council in Sherbrooke and the delegation showed them their full support. The committee also informed the delegates of the new pressure tactics that will be put in motion over the summer and fall.

Actions are planned all across Quebec, laying the groundwork for our ultimate pressure tactic: going on strike.

We encourage you to contact your local unions to find out the action plan in your institution!

If the government wants a tentative agreement with healthcare professionals, it will have to seriously increase its offers.
