The first two days of the strike, held on November 8 and 9, caused quite a stir, to say the least. It seems clear to us that the government has grossly underestimated the anger of healthcare professionals, as well as the support they are garnering in public opinion. Just look at the reactions provoked by Minister Christian Dubé when he cited the number of surgeries cancelled due to the walkout. The public wasn’t fooled. They know perfectly well that hundreds of surgeries are canceled every day due to staff shortages, due to poor working conditions.

It is only through strong mobilization on the picket lines, with the support of the population, that your Negotiating Committee will succeed in influencing and forcing the government to listen to the healthcare professionals’ solutions. To achieve considerable gains, you need to keep up the pressure.

For this reason, we are announcing two other strike days on November 23 and 24, 2023. Moreover, the delegation meeting in a special federal council did not rule out an eventual unlimited general strike.  

We’re well aware that the next few weeks will be no picnic. Going on strike is no fun. If we’ve reached this point today, it’s because this government has left us no choice. Your working conditions were already unacceptable, now they’re offering you a paltry 10.3% salary increase over 5 years to keep up with inflation, and they want to be able to move you wherever they please, like a pawn with no heart, no personal life and no clinical judgment. There’s a limit! 

The government is counting on our mobilization running out of steam to force you to accept pathetic offers. Let’s show them they’re wrong!
